Color blocks, photo inserts, and type find natural alignment points with the logo.
When fitting a solid color block behind the primary or secondary logo, the margin around all sides of the logo should be double the letterspacing between the ‘i’ and ‘t’ (2X), the spacing unit repeated across the primary logo.
The same rules apply to fitting solid color blocks around any of the brand foundation lockups.
The color-blocked logo can hug the edge of photographic imagery, or be inset within it, so long as there is ample contrast.

Color blocks can also extend to form modular components within a composition that separate text and image.

The primary logo lockup can be pulled apart to accommodate photographic inserts. The space between the photo and the surrounding logo is the letterspacing unit (X).
The inserted photo can match the height of the wordmark, or extend above and below it and function as a cropping mechanism. It can be center-aligned, bottom-aligned, or aligned to the cap height. These rules apply to both landscape and portrait inserts.
Color blocking can also be applied: the block fits tightly around the logo + photo lockup.

The secondary logo can also be pulled apart. The inserted photo always extends to the same width as the secondary logo, but it can be any height, so long as the spacing between the logo and the photo remains consistent.

If the photo is significantly larger than the logo, double or quadruple the space between the two elements.

When setting type within a larger composition, aim to find natural alignment points with the other graphic elements in the piece.
With the primary logo, left-align the copy with the letter ‘D’. With the secondary logo, left-align the copy with the logo, or align it with the height of the word ‘Detroit’. Maintain the proper clearspace.
